The First and Fully Adjustable Lens for Cataract Patients
The First and Fully Adjustable Lens for Cataract Patients

Ginsberg Eye is excited to offer the Light Adjustable Lens which is the world’s first and only intraocular lens (IOL) implant whose power can be fine-tuned post-surgery. The LAL is made from silicon-based, photosensitive material, the lens responds to gentle, patterned UV light treatments performed right in our office. This allows Dr. Ginsberg to achieve remarkably clear, personalized and custom vision for each of our patients.
What is The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)?
The Light Adjustable Lens is a revolutionary new intraocular lens that is refined after the lens is implanted into your eyes. This lens gives better uncorrected vision than standard monofocal or toric lens implants for most patients.
Why Choose the Light Adjustable Lens?
The Light Adjustable Lens offers a level of customization in cataract surgery that was previously unattainable. It caters to your unique vision needs, potentially reducing your dependence on glasses and enhancing your overall quality of life. It also allows you to give Ginsberg Eye direct feedback and to be involved in the entire process. This increases the likelihood of achieving your ideal refractive outcome.
How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?
The unique feature of the Light Adjustable Lens is that the shape and focusing characteristics can be changed after implantation in the eye using an office-based UV light source called a Light Delivery Device or LDD. The Light Adjustable Lens itself has special particles (called macromers), which are distributed throughout the lens. When ultraviolet (UV) light from the LDD is directed to a specific area of the lens, the particles in the path of the light connect with other particles (forming polymers). The remaining unconnected particles then move to the exposed area. This movement causes a highly predictable change in the curvature of the lens. The new shape of the lens will match the prescription you selected during your eye exam.
What Should I Expect After Cataract Surgery?
You must follow all post operative instructions given to you by Dr. Ginsberg and Ginsberg Eye staff, including always wearing the UV-blocking glasses that will be provided to you. As with any cataract surgery, your vision may not be perfect immediately after surgery.
Over the next weeks, you and Dr. Ginsberg will work together to optimize your vision. Please pay close attention to your vision so that you can discuss your preferences with Dr. Ginsberg.
What Should I Expect After Each Light Treatment?
Vision will be blurry immediately after each treatment and for the following 24 hours. As the lens reshapes you should notice your vision improving as the LAL reshapes to refine your vision. Your eyes will be dilated for several hours for each treatment. It should take about 24 hours after each light treatment for your vision to improve.
How Many Total Light Treatments Will I Need?
You will receive between 1 and 3 light treatments, each lasting approximately 90 seconds and separated by at least 3 days. The total number of light treatments is based on achievement of the desired visual outcome that you and your surgical eyecare team selected. Once you have achieved your final optimal vision, the lens power is permanently locked in with 2 final light treatments to prevent any further changes.
Light Treatment Schedule

Fixed vs. Adjustable Lenses
With other lenses, you have to make a lot of decisions about the vision you want before your cataract surgery. Once implanted, those lenses can’t be changed; they’re what’s known as “fixed.”
The Light Adjustable Lens, however, is an adjustable lens. This means that the only decision you have to make before your surgery is to choose the Light Adjustable Lens. The rest can be made after your surgery once your eye has healed.
You and Dr. Ginsberg then have the ability to adjust the lens and optimize your vision based on your unique preferences and lifestyle requirements. So you will truly have vision that’s just for you.
UV Protective Eyewear

Immediately after surgery, you must wear the UV protective eyewear. The UV-blocking glasses you are given will protect the Light Adjustable Lens from UV light sources other than the LDD that Dr. Ginsberg will use to optimize your vision. Exposing the Light Adjustable Lens to other UV light sources will potentially change the lens correction in an uncontrolled manner. If you do not wear the provided UV-blocking eyewear, your vision may not improve or it could get worse. If this happens, the Light Adjustable Lens may have to be removed or replaced with a new lens to improve your vision.
